During our healthy living campaigns with my family, we would often see groups of young people gathered, many of them only to smoke drugs. They had a reputation in town as thieves and were considered a complete danger to society. Gradually, I began approaching them, inviting them to play games. Initially, they were reluctant, mocking and running away, but over time, they began talking to me and trusting me. I started visiting them, getting to know their problems more closely. I encountered very humble homes filled with family problems, and I also discovered cases of sexual abuse and assault. With the help of the proper authorities, we were initially able to help them, and I found ways to help them with their schoolwork and to help them appreciate this special time of life for them. Each of them found a father figure in me, and I pointed them to Jesus as the only Father who never fails.
There are many more things I could share about this wonderful experience, but I want to end by telling you that now, there are no thieves or young people smoking on the streets of the town. In the place of the smoke and profanity rising up from the street corners, there is now a Generation for Christ. Sometimes life’s challenges drain me and make me feel like giving up. However at those times I remember Jesus, who did not give up on those young people gathered on the street corners, and who has never given up on me, and I feel encouraged to face difficulties with Christ by my side.
